It is a marketing name, not a legal category: Korea’s official list of cosmetic types names “essence” but not “ampoule” or “serum”. Use it after cleansing and before cream, thinner textures first. Texture, not the word on the bottle, decides where a product goes: thinnest first, richest last. Line up an ampoule, a serum and an essence from three Korean brands and the “essence” may well be the thickest of the three. Nothing is wrong with your shelf. In Korea, none of these three words comes with a legal definition of texture or strength, so each brand uses them its own way.
